The original story by Jeff Arch is dangerously similar to dozens of old pictures in which children convince divorced parents to re-unite or steer a widowed parent in the direction of a new mate. Ephron's Sleepless spells out the unconscious fantasy that links its main characters with the audience at large: "You don't want to be in love, you want to be in love in a movie."
